I have a short essay here which discusses Chrono Trigger in the context of what things like Game Over, save-reload, etc., mean in terms of game narratives. I explore time travel as a metaphor for some mundane gameplay features even in games that aren't about time travel. (I also discussed many of the same topics on this forum.)

There's also what I think is a novel take on the identity of "The Entity" responsible for the time portals.

That Lucca's Mom sidequest seems to be a recurring theme in Chrono Trigger write-ups. I remember Nelson linking to an article in the sidequests topic as well.

It is an interesting and well-realized section of the game. The whole campfire dialogue flows somewhat organically and there is something likable in the way the characters take stabs at guessing who/what might be pulling the strings behind it all, although the Entity is left very vague and introduced too late from a dramatic standpoint.

I think the reason why this particular sidequest resonates with a lot of players is that the main game sees you go through time and space on a grand-scale plot which, by its very scale, keeps you detached from the actual events. In contrast, the Lucca sidequest is a small personal moment that has no significance to the world-saving as such but hits much closer to the main characters.

Yes, agreed. I think that's a strength of the sidequests generally, but especially the Lucca's mom quest.
