Hey all,

Another new poster here, looking forward to exploring Majora's Mask with everyone. Wish I'd signed up earlier for the Deus Ex playthrough - that game remains one of my all time favorites, with yet another playthrough pending release of the High Def Texture Pack.

I started my video gaming voyage on an old Macintosh SE 30, one of the first Macs that didn't require the operating system to be loaded on disk, when I was probably 8 or 9. The Scarab of Ra (first person maze exploration and adventure) and Dungeon of Doom (graphical roguelike) were two of my first games - my love of PC gaming came shortly after, watching a buddy of mine play Sierra adventures and Apogee platformers on his family's DOS machine.

The first PC I owned became quickly devoted to playing all the games that I'd seen over the years but missed actually playing myself - one of the reasons this board appeals to me so much. My current machine is too old to play even most of the last generation of games, let alone the current one. I'm all about the vintage games - that's most of what I play, after all!

Hello all,

I've recently begun taking a more active role in my subscription to the Brainy Gamer by listening to past podcasts, and decided to come see what the forum was all about based on some comments Mr. Abbott made. At first I wasn't sure how suited I was for a 'Vintage Game Club', but after looking at your track record I realize I've beaten all these games a number of times (well, except for Grim Fandango). Then I remind myself I've been both a PC and console gamer for about 22 of my 24 years now, so I suppose that may explain why they don't feel 'vintage' to me (well crap, now I feel old... ).

I'm an undergraduate Computer Science & Engineering Technology major with a minor in Japanese Culture, currently in my penultimate semester at the University of Toledo in Toledo, Ohio. I also work for UT as a Desktop Technician for the Division of Information Technology.

I've had a large interest in the deeper aspects of gaming culture, especially the social commentary provided by games, for a number of years, and was an avid follower of Insert Credit (which has unfortunately announced the closing of their doors, at least temporarily). I'm very glad to have The Brainy Gamer as a new venue for this sort of discussion.

I'm a tremendous fan of RPG's, Square ones in particular. I also greatly enjoy puzzle, strategy (both turn-based and RTS), Simulation games, and racing titles (the inclusion of which throws many for a loop). I do, however, have plenty of titles from every genre that I enjoy.

Among my favorites are:

RPG: Xeno series (Xenogears being my overall favorite game), Final Fantasy series (particularly I, VI, VIII, and XII), Chrono Trigger, Mana series, Skies of Arcadia, Lost Odyssey, Fragile: Sayonara Tsuki no Haikyo (currently writing an english language full translation walkthrough of it on GameFAQs/NeoSeeker/SuperCheats), Star Ocean series, Paladin's Quest, Breath of Fire II, Mother series, Suikoden series, Fallout series... Many, many more.

Puzzle: Puzzle Bobble/Bust-a-Move series, Lumines series, Warioware series, Mr. Driller series, Hexic, Oddworld Series, Professor Layton

Strategy: Ogre Battle, Homeworld series, Command & Conquer series, Front Mission 4, Final Fantasy Tactics A2, Total Annihilation, Warcraft II, Starcraft, Bahamut Lagoon

Racing: Midnight Club, Burnout series, Need for Speed Carbon, Mario Kart series, F-Zero series, High Octane

Shooters: Halo series, Lost Planet, Quake, Doom series, Goldeneye, Call of Duty 4

Platformers/Action/Adventure (since they tend to blur the lines): Metroid series, Zelda series, Mario series, Lostwinds, Soul Reaver, GTA IV, Beyond Good & Evil, Jet Grind Radio, Sonic series, No More Heroes, Gun Valkyrie, Kid Icarus

Fighting: Power Stone, Mortal Kombat series, Soul Calibur series, Street Fighter series, Darkstalkers series, Guilty Gear series, Super Smash Bros. series, Psychic Force 2012, Killer Instinct

Simulation: Star Fox series, Phantom Crash, Metal Wolf Chaos, Animal Crossing, Sims 2, Sim City series, Civlization/Alpha Centauri series

Oh, my god.  I'm new here - my first post; stumbled onto your forums while reading random blogs (of which TBG was one).

I'm 32, and have been a gamer pretty much as long as I've been able to hold a joystick or mash buttons on a keyboard.  I've a particular love for games in general - not just playing them, but what makes them tick, what makes some games good and others terrible.  I have a deep and abiding love for old games, too, and despite having a very high end gaming laptop have more hard drive space devoted to classic games than I do to modern ones... Which is really something, when one considers the size of modern games.

I love console and PC games alike.  Though I don't have any classic consoles anymore, the magic of emulation coupled with hacked classic controllers has helped out immensely.

I generally prefer adventure and role playing and strategy games, though I enjoy pretty much everything.

As to all time favourite games.. hmm... well, this certainly won't be an exhaustive list; or even in any particular order, just the first that come to mind:

- Star Control 2 (I love adventures; particularly epic scifi ones)
- The Various Sierra Adventures (Space Quest; Quest for Glory in particular)
- Various Final Fantasy games
- NES and SNES Mario games
- Battletech 1 'n 2; Mechwarrior 1-3, Mech Commander
- Starcraft
- Middle Ultima games (6 in particular, also 4 and 5)
- Chrono Cross/Trigger
- XCom's
- Fallout's

Eh, I could go on and on.

Welcome to the VGC, Wintersdark (and Ikaruwa - sorry I missed your post)! It's great to have a couple more gamers with a few miles on their tires. I hope you enjoy your time here, and I look forward to your thoughts on Thief.

Happy gaming!

Hello. I'm new here, just found this site a couple hours ago. I've been reading over the older commentary and it looks like a lot of fun, so I thought I'd join in.

I'm 24, and I've been playing video games almost as long as I've been alive. I try to seek out a variety of different and unusual games; I'd just as soon play something like Zork or Cave Story as I would the latest and greatest AAA title. There's so much good stuff that you can't find without heading off the beaten path and poking around a little.

I'm pretty good at overcoming the challenges a game might throw at me, and I like it when they're tough enough to hinder me for a while. I also like having direct control over a character, and I'm not very fond of stat-dependent RPG systems, but there are plenty of games that violate those rules and manage to be a lot of fun anyway.

It's hard for me to make a definitive list of favorite games, but here are a few of the ones I like most: Majora's Mask, Link's Awakening, Terranigma, Xenogears, Sin & Punishment, Mother, Mother 3, Super Mario 64, Blast Corps, Mischief Makers, Jet Force Gemini, The Longest Journey, Myst, Iji, ZZT, the Touhou series, Yoshi's Island, and Beyond Good & Evil.

I also have some interest in game development, but I don't exactly have much to show for it yet.

Hello everyone!

I'd like to present myself another recruit to this fine guild of antiquarians and appreciators!  I've been a reader of The Brainy Gamer for some time and have found great delight in discovering both the articles themselves and the community that surrounds it and of which it is a part - one which I never knew existed and which certainly heartens me.  Moreso has the discovery of this particular association!  Being myself a gamer, as it were, for rather most of this my corporeal existence, I've always cherished some, maybe fond, belief or intuition, rather, that "games" are often something more than the mere appellation might indicate.  But until this point, I haven't had quite the courage to enter the realm so to speak.  So, I humbly submit myself to the conversation and to your approval, that perhaps I might join you all around a mutual, blazing hearth!  So further, may I offer a hopeful and forward looking, "Well met!"  =)

Personally, I am an English student, preparing currently to begin graduate study.  Because of which, most of time seems to be spent in books.  I haven't had nearly as much time to game as I would like, but it remains a part of me.  Truthfully, I like to include them in my love of literature.  Perhaps it may seem silly to say, but I mean that, sometimes, I feel that a very great game can approach the spiritual.  And being still young and green, I think I cannot avoid (and often embrace) the probable reality, that a great part of my self has been shaped by such experiences.  I am fascinated, deeply and utterly, by games as art and life.

Lastly, a humble thanks for the existence of yourselves and this place, as a haven for honest discussion!  I hope I can contribute something of worth and merit!  =)

(By way of postscript, and I apologize for being so long-winded as I am!  Regarding specific games, I am a great devotee of the CRPG, especially the series of Black Isle and Bioware, but particularly Fallout, Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment and Icewind Dale [and I to this day am haunted with images of the Vale of Shadows, with its towering, cowled statues, the howling wind, the crunching snow and the vastness of its great emptiness; likewise the sad, sagacious wandering of the Vault Dweller]!  Lately, I've been quite taken by Pool of Radiance [which I never was able to play originally], and Final Fantasy Tactics A2, among countless others!  Upon starting Thief, I must admit myself wholly wonderstruck!)
